Government of Canada Supports the Niagara Chapter of Native Women Inc.

FORT ERIE, Ontario, - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., Member of Parliament for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced funding for the Niagara Chapter of Native Women Inc.



This funding will support the Native Women's Training and Resource Cultural Centre's Walk Together Leadership Initiative, which aims to encourage, strengthen, and enhance the leadership abilities of Aboriginal women in the Niagara Region.



"Our Government is pleased to support community-based, culturally focused initiatives," said Minister Moore. "By empowering Aboriginal women in the Niagara Region, we are creating opportunities for them to increase their skills, knowledge and leadership abilities."



"I am delighted to provide support for such an important project," said Minister Nicholson. "These activities will enable the community's Aboriginal women to connect with each other and develop skills and access services that may often seem out of reach."



"We appreciate this funding from the Government of Canada for the Walk Together Leadership Initiative," said Wendy Sturgeon, Executive Director, Niagara Chapter of Native Women Inc. "It will provide role modelling, allow for increased voice at regional tables, and will build self-esteem within the individuals who participate.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $26,409 through the Women's Community Initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage's Aboriginal Women's Programming . This initiative enables Aboriginal women to influence policies, programs, legislation, and decision making that affect their social, cultural, economic, and political well-being in their communities and in Canadian society. It includes a component to address issues around family violence and a self-government initiative to support the full participation of Aboriginal women in consultations and decision-making processes.
